A Collection of Kids Books About 2020
It’s no secret that 2020 has been a year of suffering for so many across the nation and around the world. From wildfires, to racial injustice, to a global pandemic, to massive economic turmoil, this year hurts. Portland-based publishing company, A Kids Book About, believes kids are ready for these and other hard conversations, and we agree!
It all started with A Kids Book About Racism, a book written by co-founder and CEO, Jelani Memory. As a black father with a blended family (four white kids and two brown kids), racism was an inevitable topic of conversation. He thought he’d only print one copy, but it turned out other grownups thought their kids could use an honest kids book on the topic as well. That one book turned into one more, and then one more after that, until A Kids Book About had a full collection of books from different authors on a multitude of important topics. On the blog today, we wanted to shout out some AKBA titles that feel particularly resonant over at Team Nugget. A Kids Book About Empathy helps kids understand that expressing empathy is more than just a concern — it means a willingness to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes (not literally, that would be gross), often leading to a desire to act on their behalf. At Nugget, we agree empathy is at the heart of what it means to be a good human.
No one living today has ever seen anything like COVID-19 before — and it's affecting everyone! It has been a complicated time, even for us grown ups. This book is written by a scientist who studies disease outbreaks and is meant to provide some answers and start discussions about what each of us can do to help keep our communities safer during the coronavirus pandemic.
Nugget cares deeply about voting — Election Day is actually a paid holiday for us, so everyone has the time to vote! This book explains what voting is, how it works, and examines its influence through the lens of American history. It also challenges kids to wonder: why is it important? And who do you think should be able to vote?
We've partnered up with A Kids Book About over on Instagram to gift a trio of books to a special winner as well as a $100 Gift Card to Nugget! Check it out and get entered to win. We hope you love these books as much as we do!
