Is the Nugget couch worth it?

We see this question all the time: Why is the Nugget® couch so expensive? Is the Nugget even worth it?
And while countless Nugget reviews say over and over again that yes, it is — we know that the Nugget isn’t the lowest-priced play couch on the market. (Or the most expensive, either!) And we know that price is such an important factor in making a decision about what to get for your kids.
So, is a Nugget worth it? We think it is: Families get so much value out of the playtime and versatility, but it’s more than that. The value is in the materials, thoughtful design and construction, washability, open-ended use, and unparalleled customer support behind the product. For families who care about those aspects, the higher upfront price feels worthwhile.
What goes into the price of a Nugget?
Great question! Let’s talk about the physical components first: Every piece of Nugget® play furniture, including the Nugget play couch, is designed using open-cell polyurethane foam that is sourced from a North Carolina supplier and CertiPUR-US® certified (meaning it has passed a rigorous set of standards for emissions, content, and durability).

Every Nugget is wrapped in the fabric Cover Set of your choice, complete with sturdy, lay-flat handles on the largest pieces, color-matched zippers, and zipper garages.
Lower-priced play couch alternatives may seem appealing up front, but it’s important to look at the fine print of the materials, certifications, and features offered. Jump to our play couch comparison chart for our recommendations when you’re weighing your options!
Then there are the things you can’t see from home: Our Production team working tirelessly to hand-assemble every Nugget (right here in our home state of North Carolina!), our Quality Control team checking every product before it goes out the door, and our Customer Experience team honoring the warranty and answering Nuggeteer questions after the product ships. We also undergo extra safety testing, earning important certifications that give you peace of mind. You can learn more about Nugget’s materials here.
What can you actually do with a Nugget?
Considering it’s the best thing to happen to playtime since… well… ever, we love talking about this. Think of the Nugget® as a set of really well made building blocks disguised as a cute couch — that can be anything in the eyes of a kid (or kid at heart).

Nuggets are great for floor play, obstacle courses, forts, climbing and movement, pretend play, lounging, reading, playing games (or making up new ones!), and sibling/cooperative play. They’re just as at home in the living room or family room as they are in a child’s bedroom or playroom.
We have tons of builds you can try out at home, of course, but the Nugget isn’t limited to just those ideas. The only limit is truly your imagination.
Is the Nugget just for little kids?
In the words of countless big kids… no way, bro! Kids age 1+ find new ways to play with their Nugget® every day.

A toddler might love using the Nugget to practice gross motor skills, to create a cozy reading nest, to play hide-and-seek, or for floor play.
Preschoolers will love making forts and engaging in elaborate imaginative play — it’s a cave, a zoo for stuffies, a slide, or a stage for performances.
Elementary school-aged kids will love making larger builds, creating new games, summiting Mount Nugget, and building movie night amphitheatre seating.
Older children, pre-teens, and teens will love having a place that’s just theirs to hang out and relax — they love lounging on it, reading books, doing homework, gaming, and using it as spare seating for group hangs.
The Nugget is truly a product that grows and evolves with your child’s age and interests.
Are Nugget products easy to clean and maintain?
Our products can handle whatever you throw at them — real or imaginary. But we know that messes still happen!
Nugget® Cover Sets are machine washable, and can be easily spot cleaned for small messes. Find our full care instructions here. For those who want extra peace of mind, consider protecting your foam with a Liner Set, which is made from waterproof material.
Do we need more than one Nugget to have fun?
Such a good question. We find that many families start with one Nugget® to make sure they love it, so it’s a great entry point into the world of Nugget play furniture. One Nugget provides tons of fun — and there are so many one-Nugget builds to try, even if you have multiple kids.
Once families start itching for bigger builds, they find adding another Nugget simply multiplies the fun and allows more versatility with the product. If your kids like to have their own space, it can be useful to have a Nugget for each. You can make larger builds, and more complex builds with two Nuggets. It simply offers more options for play.

Many families decide to try adding a Chunk® play ottoman next. This offers more variety in the shape of the pieces (all four of Chunk’s pieces are round instead of triangles or folding rectangles). It also expands your possibilities: explore Nugget-Chunk builds for obstacle courses, for builds that will test your balance, for builds you can climb, and for builds that invite more movement.
Our most recent piece of play furniture is our Smore™ play chair, which is another great addition to a Nugget! Check out the versatility with Nugget-Smore builds here. Again, it offers more shape variety and it’s a great choice for smaller spaces like cozy bedrooms — and since Smore can be personalized, it’s great for kids who want their very own.
Are there any downsides or limits to owning a Nugget?
If you really don’t want to be the hang-out house for the neighborhood, you might think twice about building a collection. Kids LOVE congregating at the “house with all the Nuggets!”
Joking aside, we understand that it’s an investment upfront. While there are Nuggeteer families that own and love MANY Nuggets, not everyone has a ton of storage space at home. Be sure to check the dimensions and consider the physical footprint of the product.
The Nugget® is also not designed for sleep, so it shouldn’t be used as an extra bed or place to nap. Our Liner Sets are sold separately, and the occasional washing and reassembly can feel like another thing on the to-do list.
We think the tradeoffs are worth it, but everyone should make the decision that’s best for their family.
What should you compare when shopping for a play couch?
When we invented the Nugget® — the first-ever play couch — in 2014, we never could have imagined a day in which there are countless “Nugget dupes” on the market. Our imaginations are pretty darn big, but they did not know yet that we’d just laid the foundations for an entire industry of play furniture.

| What to compare | Nugget® | What to look for in another play couch |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | Starts at $249. | Compare the total price and what is included for that price. |
| Pieces + shapes | 4 pieces: one folding base, one cushion, and two triangle pillows. | Consider the number, size, and variety — more pieces can often simply create more clutter instead of more fun. |
| Size + footprint | In a standard couch setup, Nugget® measures 66" W × 33" D × 22.25" H with pillows. | Compare the assembled footprint as well as how much space the pieces require when not in use. |
| Materials + sourcing | Open-cell polyurethane foam produced in North Carolina, with Cover Set fabrics sourced from Vietnam, China, and El Salvador. The Nugget® is assembled in Butner, North Carolina. | Look for clear information about what the product is made from, where materials come from, and where final assembly happens. |
| Foam certification | Nugget foam is CertiPUR-US® certified. | Check whether the foam carries an independent certification and exactly what that certification covers. |
| Chemical emissions certification | The Nugget® is GREENGUARD Gold certified. | Check whether the finished product has an emissions certification, and whether it meets standard GREENGUARD or the more stringent GREENGUARD Gold requirements. |
| Durability | Some Nugget families are still using original Nuggets purchased more than a decade ago. | Look for evidence of long-term use, construction quality, customer reviews, and warranty support. |
| Versatility | The Nugget® can be used for floor play, forts, climbing, obstacle courses, pretend play, reading, lounging, games, and more. | Consider whether the pieces and shapes support a wide variety of uses as kids grow. |
| Washable covers | Cover Sets are machine washable, and additional Cover Sets can be purchased for wash day, a room refresh, or a new color. | Check whether covers are removable and machine washable and whether additional covers are available separately. |
| Liner options | Liner Sets are an optional add-on, allowing families to decide whether they want an extra layer of protection. | Check whether liners are included, required, optional, and what level of protection they provide. |
| Intended use & sleep safety | The Nugget® is designed for play and lounging, not for sleeping. | If a play couch is marketed for sleep, check the intended age group and ask what applicable safety standards and testing support that claim. |
| Warranty | The Nugget® is backed by a 2-year warranty. | Compare warranty length, what is covered, exclusions, and how claims are handled. |
| Customer support | Nugget’s Customer Experience team is staffed by real people in North Carolina and Georgia, where our teams are based. | Look at how easy it is to contact the company and what support is available after purchase. |
Does the Nugget ever go on sale?
We offer a year-round discount for bundling our products together. Bundling two products (the Nugget®, Chunk®, or Smore™) saves you 10%, and bundling three or more saves you 15%.
Additionally, Nugget offers rare, limited sales, usually occurring around the holiday season, that are equally available to all customers (ie, you don’t have to be a first-time customer or working in a specific profession to take advantage!).
Other than that, you probably won’t see flash promotions or random discounts, and that’s by design. Find out more about Nugget’s pricing philosophy here!
